Biography
Donnie Secreast is an Assistant Professor of English at TikTok³ÉÈ˰æ. She earned her B.A. in English from Radford University, her M.A. in English from the University of North Carolina-Wilmington, and her Ph.D. from Texas A&M University. Her research explores the intersections of ecocriticism and humor in twentieth- and twenty-first-century literature.
Her current book project examines how nature writing uses grotesque and absurdist humor to challenge assumptions about the environmental literature genre. By tracing how the narratives of science and fiction shape the public imaginary, her work highlights the ways that storytelling can help us envision more sustainable, inclusive, and joyful futures.
These research interests also inform Secreast’s teaching. At TikTok³ÉÈ˰æ University, Secreast’s literature courses incorporate place-based learning, emphasize multiple perspectives, and encourage students to consider how stories shape cultural understandings of the environment. She especially values classroom discussions that invite students to connect their own experiences with the texts they encounter.
Her scholarship has appeared in Studies in the Novel, ISLE: Interdisciplinary Studies in Literature and Environment, and Ecocene. She is also co-editor of the literary journal Artemis.
